Fomapan Cine 400 is a panchromatically sensitised black and white negative film, made for shooting on a movie camera and digitising the negative afterwards. It has slightly pronounced grain, good resolution and sharp edges, and it handles unfavourable light well.

Nominal speed is ISO 400/27°, but its wide exposure latitude delivers very good results even overexposed by at least a stop (ISO 200/24°) or underexposed by a stop (ISO 800/30°), depending on the developer and whether you push or pull.

What it actually is

Fomapan Cine 400 uses the same emulsion as the classic Fomapan 400 (Action), in a format that fits cine cameras. The characteristic curves match exactly and the base is the same 0.125 mm cellulose triacetate.

The emulsion is panchromatic — sensitive across the visible spectrum, though not equally. It is less sensitive to cool tones (violets, blues and cyans render darker) and more sensitive to warm ones (yellow, orange, red). Deep red is the exception: past roughly 680 nm the curve falls away sharply, and reds beyond 700 nm will read as solid black.

Grain measures RMS 17.5 developed in Microphen — ordinary enough for a fast film, but across a frame this much smaller than 35mm stills, that grain reads as very pronounced indeed. It is exactly the look of old movies and newsreel footage.
